We share the sad news that Brahms scholar and ABS Advisory Board member Camilla Cai died peacefully on June 3, 2026. She joined the ABS in 1983 at the Society’s conference in Washington, D.C. in honor of the 150th anniversary of Brahms’s birth, and she served as a member of the Board of Directors from 1998 to 2015. Professor Cai specialized in the study of Brahms’s late piano works, which began with the completion of her Ph.D. dissertation at Boston University in 1986, and the music of women composers, with special focus on the music of Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel. In addition to many articles on music, she created new scholarly editions of Brahms’s music (for the complete works edition and Henle “Urtext” editions of the composer’s piano music), as well as an edition of Hensel’s songs without words for piano. She also wrote about Norwegian music and composers, an interest that reflects her Norwegian heritage. She co-authored with her father Einar Haugen a book on the violinist Ole Bull (University of Wisconsin Press, 1993). Professor Cai taught for 19 years at Kenyon College in Ohio, and retired to Farmington, Maine, in 2005 with her husband, where she was active in the historical society and the cultural life of that small university town. She continued spending time in Europe every year until 2020. Her brilliance, humor, and kindness will be sorely missed by all who knew her.
